Reports have emerged that the UK Government has proposed the first two weeks of November 2021 as new dates for the crucial COP26 climate conference, flagging concerns about the state of international travel safety due to coronavirus. In early April it was confirmed that the COP26 climate conference would have to be postponed as a result of the coronavirus pandemic which has imposed restrictions on gatherings, events and public transport as part of national lockdowns. While the UK is expected to be out of lockdown in the coming months, concerns remain over the interest and safety of international travel. Both The Guardian and the BBC report that ministers will recommend the week of November 1-12, 2021, as the new date for the international climate conference. COP26 has been considered the most important international climate summit since the creation of the Paris Agreement in 2015. The United Kingdom had been confirmed as the host and the summit was scheduled to take place in Glasgow from 9 to 19 November 2020. . According to the UN, the world is "very far" from meeting the goals of the Paris Agreement. Preliminary data for 2019 suggests that greenhouse gas emissions increased globally in that year and that carbon emissions from fossil fuels grew by more than 0.5% over the past year. COP26 is seen as a vital summit to negotiate more ambitious and accelerated decarbonisation efforts.
The coronavirus has caused a flux in emissions trajectories and the International Energy Agency predicts an 8% decline in global emissions this year. However, the threat of “retaliatory emissions” (where economic productivity will increase following the lockdown) is likely to cause a spike in emissions in the coming months. The delay is notable for a few reasons. First, the US elections are scheduled Job Function Email List for later this year and holding the COP26 conference a year after the results would allow Donald Trump to complete his process of withdrawing from the Paris Agreement, or allow a president democratic renegotiate US participation in the global climate agreement. Second, negotiations on a “Paris-style” global agreement to halt irreversible ecological damage and biodiversity loss have begun as part of the 15th meeting of the Conference of the Parties (COP 15) to the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD). Conferences and preliminary meetings related to the CBD COP conference have all been canceled and postponed due to COVID-19 and the COP15 conference in China is scheduled for October .
The UN is believed to want to maintain this order of priorities in terms of global negotiations. Finally, despite being the first major economy to legislate for net zero emissions, the UK government has yet to reveal a clear and concise roadmap on how to achieve the rapid emissions reductions required. The UK also has to submit an updated national contribution (NDC). The UK's current submission of emissions reductions as part of the 2015 Paris Agreement was submitted as a member of the European Union (EU), having since left the Union, the UK will have to submit an individual target. The Climate Change Committee (CCC) will recommend future carbon budgets in September, giving ministers more than a year to develop a working agenda for those targets.Zero Waste is about reducing the waste we generate in our homes. This includes food scraps, recyclables and general household waste. Going Zero Waste aims to recognize the environmental impact that consumer habits are having on the environment and eliminate as much of it as possible. Every bag you put away, unnecessary paper you print, and food you waste needs to be recycled somehow or disposed of in the landfill. When you start paying attention to what you are throwing away week after week, you will really be able to see how much waste we are creating and throwing away.
