Fire Lizards (originally known as dragonets) are a native species of Pern, present before the colonization of pern. They are, in a sense, primitive Dragons, because they were the genetic source for Kitti Ping's original 18 dragons. Being very much like dragons, they share many of the same abilities.
Characteristics
Fire Lizards are about the size of a large bird. They come in all the same colors as dragons, and the temperament of said colors correspond to their larger cousins, unlike dragons however, men and women can Impress any color of fire lizard, and they do not need to be a certain age to do so. Also, a person can have multiple fire lizards. Fire Lizards lack the ability to communicate in words, but can have limited success telepathically communicating pictures and thoughts. They are, however, much more affected by emotions and events around them, to the point of hysteria. There seems to be a group consciousness, on a basic level, that allows all fire lizards to experience large events. For example, the new fire lizards of the ninth pass knew about the volcano eruption at landing, even though they were not alive for it. There has also been speculation that fire lizards are immortal, or so long lived as to appear so, as they don't appear to age and no one has ever seen one to die of old age or disease. Fire Lizards are very sociable creatures, they travel in fairs and love to sing.
History
Fire Lizards have been present on Pern long before humans colonized the planet. Their genetic code was speculated, during the first pass, to be divergent evolution from a type of sea creature. Tunnel snakes are the other branch. It is unknown how or why they developed such unique characteristics, such as breathing fire, telekinesis, or telepathy. They were, at the time of Landing, exposed to Mentasynth, an alien compound intended to strengthen their latent telepathic talents. During the first pass, they were kept as pets and it was known that they could, and would, protect people and animals from thread and other natural dangers. However, By the Ninth Pass, fire lizards were little more than a myth or legend.

Menolly, a MasterwomanHarper, was one of the first to impress a firelizard during the 9th Pass, and at that time she was just the youngest daughter of a Holder at Half-Circle. She had Impressed 9 firelizards in a cave that she helped the mother Gold move the eggs into originally, and later impressed another bronze- poll- when a holder's son nearly dropped the hatching egg, and its inhabitant saw her first.
She had a Gold- Beauty- three Bronzes- Rocky, Diver, and Poll- three Browns- Brownie, Mimic, and Lazybones- two Greens- Aunties one and two- and Blue Uncle.
Mirrim was another who impressed firelizards, and she later impressed a Green Draogn as well.
The Southern Continent held more firelizards than the North, until they were rediscovered by these people and o nthe southern continent.
At Moonlit Weyr, besides the original colors, there are also some new colors, the same as those in the Dragons.
Gold,Bronze,Lilac,Teal,Brown,Sunset,Sand,Sapphire,Blue,Spiral,Pyrite,Green,Dusk,Silver, and White.
Gold and Lilac clutches have more chances of surviving in the wild, and generally dusks, silvers, and whites don't survive untill hatching in the wild either. Their eggs being so hard, small, and generally more fragile, many eggs die before the baby can be born.
So those colors are rare. Sapphires also are uncommon because the mutation doesn't happen often.
At the Weyr's firelizard Sands, even green and spiral clutches have chances of survival, which means that blues, pyrites, greens, and spirals will be more common.
the rarer colors come usually from Gold or Lilac clutches, especially between a gold and teal, lilac and teal, or gold and brown, although generally gold firelizards don't let love interfere with their traditions of bronzes chasing the queens.
Mulitple firelizards can be impressed by one person, and nearly all firelizards will live on if their human passes away, but will not re-impress. Impression for Firelizards is mainly about who they see first and who feeds them first, though occasionally a firelizard has a specific human in mind when they hatch. These are the ones whose ancestors had mentasynth-enhancements.
Firelizards eggs are usually dull colors, even the gold or lilac eggs, so it is hard to know which is which, but some develop markings that a trained eye can see.
