Jainy had been sitting in her room. She'd been looking at the same sharding hide for the better part of the evening. She gave a soft growl of frustration and rubbed the back of her neck. She'd been helping the other Weyrwomen, the older Weyrwomen, with keeping record hides copied and without wrinkles. She wrinkled her own nose at that thought! Ha! She didn't know exactly how she'd managed that nice feat, but she had. And she was very proud of herself for being one of the very few that could manage it.
She stretched and yawned, not caring if anyone would see. But only one would see her yawn, and that was her beloved Jewelith. Ah, the lovely, and charming Lilac Jewelith. Charming? Ha! Lovely? Most definitely. A telltale throwback to her dam, Lilac Nimth. Jainy couldn't put her finger on it, but something about Nimth's Rider just doesn't sit well with her. But something rarely ever sits well with Jainy. It was something that she just couldn't explain in words. She looked over to her lifemate again and a soft smile changed the lines of her young face.
Enough thinking about that other girl and her dragon. She had a dragon of her own to look at and fawn over. And a beauty her Jewelith was. And yes, she was biased! Especially when it came to her lifemate. How could one not be biased, being bonded to one of the magnificent creatures on Pern? Well, she wasn't counting Firelizards, that was for sure. She sighed. Her mind going off into the tangent of the little beasties that she covetted so much! If only she could be lucky enough to impress one. That would surely show up her sister, Jaina! That would definitely put that little bragart in her place.
But one little problem. She wasn't lucky enough to get one at all! She could only hope, and hope, and hope ..... Much luck that would do for her. Sharding shells, she couldn't wait for the next Firelizard hatching.
*grumble ... grumble grumble*
Jainy sighed again and stood up. She gave pause for one more long glance at a slumbering Jewelith. Jainy then left her room and walked down the corridor to the Dining Cavern. She was glad it wasn't as busy as it usually was during the later part of the evenings. She got into line and moved along as the line moved and finally pilled tubers on a plate with a few slabs of roast wherry. She placed the plate on a tray and then filled a cup with some fruit juice. She turned around and found a seat right away. She took it and smiled politely at a few other people already sitting at the table. And then she dove right into the food on her plate.
Your not starving, Jaimine. Came the colorful voice from Jewelith.
Laugh it up, Jewelith, laugh it up! Jainy replied as she chewed on a large bite of tubers she'd stuffed, unlady-like, into her mouth.
