Jared stretched and yawned as he made his way down to the candidate barracks and to his little room. He was looking forward to the day ahead, he had it to himself to do whatever he wished! Entering, he took a quick glance around to see if anyone was there. Not a soul. He grinned and made to leap on his bed, but a small bundle sitting on it stopped him in his tracks.
Frowning, he wondered who had been in here and what could they have left for him. He sat down and carefully unwrapped the cloth revealing a small pot of sand with a fragile looking golden coloured egg. As he stared, dumbstruck at the gift, it shook. With a fright he jumped up and almost knocked the pot to the floor. It was hatching, right now!
Spinning around he frantically looked for something to feed the little thing when it hatched. He found his pack and some sandwiches he'd put in the night before and with them in hand he crawled over to his bed peering at the now shaking egg. Excitement coursed through him as he watched cracks run down the egg and a hole form at the top. His eyes grew wide as a tiny muzzle poked out, swiftly followed by the collapse of the whole egg.
A little golden fire lizard spread her wings, revealing elongated wing fingers that enhanced her beauty, and chirruped loudly. She turned to face Jared, her eyes swirling and flared her wings chirping at him. He suddenly felt the hunger she was feeling and immediately offered her a piece of his sandwich. Moving forward and sniffing at it red streaking through her eyes. Confused and upset Jared fumbled with the triangles of bread and a scrap of meat fell from one of them. The little gold darted forward, snatching it up and devouring it swiftly. She trilled, seeming happier, but pressed her foreclaws into his hand demanding more. Relieved, he opened the sandwiches and fed her the meat within until her tummy grew round with satisfaction. Once full, the new queen crawled into the crook of his arm and curled her tail protectively as far around his arm as she could.
Jared sat, with his back against his bed, the newly hatched gold asleep in his arms like a little shimmering ray of sunshine. Smiling down at her he whispered,"Soleil. I think your name is Soleil."
