Kestrel had heard a few flits around the barracks humming so she'd run into her room to check the Diamond Egg, and sure enough a spiderweb of cracks had formed on the surface of the beautiful shell.
She brought it into the common room where she knew there was food left over from lunch. Sitting in one of the comfier chairs where she held the egg and watched the new baby hatch into the world.
Her mind was racing with thoughts of what it could be. She desperately hoped she would Impress it. What if it went wild? What if her fears were confirmed and she really wasn't meant to be bonded with any kind of draconic creature?
But her fears were pushed to one side when a nose pushed through the shell of the egg in her hands. A blue nose. A very dark blue nose.
The little flit punched and kicked his way out of his shell eagerly, Kestrel gasping in fright as the broken shell flew everywhere. When he was quite finished he latched onto her arm and creeled up at her, his eyes the rainbow colour of impression.
Mesmerized Kestrel absentmindedly grabbed a scrap of wherry meat with her left hand (her free one) and gave it to the blue. He snatched it up and devoured it quickly, chirping a little happier now.
As he ate she studied his dark, deep blue hide, like the bottom of the ocean.. He looked like he would grow to be strong and muscular, and he was very big for a blue, even at this age. Settling on a name much faster than she expected she asked him, "Is your name Fathom?"
He cocked his head, as if he was considering. Cheeping he continued tearing the meat apart.
Well that's that settled she thought to herself.
She sat, a little dazed, with Fathom chewing away. Her fire lizard. She done it! The worst part was over! The scariest part done with!
Fathom craned his neck and nipped her finger for fun, his eyes glinting a bright green.
Shards.
Now that she had a fire lizard what was she to do with him??
