Ferit Day!

Josie smiled and got up from the couch, going over to the basket of ferit kits.
The babies were getting big, and now they had their eyes open and were weaned. As cute as they all were, she really didn't want any more pets.

Ocean and Berry chased each other out the window and dissapeared *between*, making enough noise to cause Zorro to look up fomr his bed and for Sunheart to protest.

There were 7 babies and almost all of them had homes waiting for them. She made a quick decision and asked her Queen, Farlith, to call not only those who had chosen to take on a baby ferit, but also two other friends of her's.

Sunheart and Raco came over to her and nosed her leg, asking her what was going on.

"The babies are going to new homes today, Sunheart, Raco!"

Raco made a chirruping noise and Sunheart crawled into her lap, with an expression as close to pouting as it could be.

"Now, Sunny, you know they have to leave! I can't keep them all now can I?!"

Sunheart tilted her head and ran to the door, pawing at it.

"Yes, I'll let you visit your kits anytime you want."

She asked Farlith to call those who were going to recieve ferit kits and smiled. Farlith came to a landing on her ledge and padded farther into the room.

Of course Mine. I am sad to see them go, but its time. Your mother let you go when it was time and so did my own. And they will be with their Connected for ever and ever, like we are. I'll call them.

Farlith let out a soft sound and called out mentally.

Come, those who havegiven homes to baby ferits! They are ready to leave and Connect!

Jared heard the gold's call and made his way swiftly to Josie's weyr, excited about the new kit. Soleil and Doe sat on each of his shoulders chirruping to eachother. Girls. He needed another guy to even the odds here! Hoping that the Melon Orange kit was male he knocked on the door and entered.

"Hi", he said as he stepped into the room, "I'm here for number five. Hope they're all doing well!"

He smiled at Sunny and Raco. "Thank you for letting me take one", he said to them. "Um... How does this work..?"

Kestrel jumped up, ready to go! This was exciting! Fathom chittered at her. "You're hatching was exciting too, lil guy. You showed me that I'm not completely hopeless.." He hummed in response and nestled himself in her front pocket.

Reaching the Goldrider's weyr she knocked and walked in saying, "Hello Josie, I'm here for Blue, I mean Baby Blue!" She was a little nervous after all.

She saw Jared here already and waved to him. "What do we do now?!, she asked, looking at Sunny sitting in Josie's lap.

Josie smiled and got up, holding Raco. Sunny made a happy sound and scurried over to the basket. A small head pushed its way out, and sunny admonished the adventurous young one with a scolding signal.

"Hey there Jared, Kestrel. Nice to see you again. Well, Sunny seems happier than I thought she might, so no problems hopefully..." She walked over to the basket and opened it up, taking out a farit kit. On one of it's toenails was orange nail paint, a tiny dot just big enough to be noticed. Next to it was a tiny blue dot.

"Jared, Sunny and Raco are still happy with you as a new parent and home for one of their babies. This is the Melon Orange baby- but hopefully you'll give him a beter name than that!"

She laughed softly, smiling down at the small bundle of fur. the male's eyes had opened two months ago, and he wasn't as small as he used to be. Now he was old enough to go with Jared.


The little ferit squirmed to get to his human, and Josie carefully placed him on the ground.

The baby knew where he wanted to go, and the final test was passed:
the melon orange kit scrambled over to Jared's foot and protested that the boy was so large. Although to everyone else's ears it was just a squeaking, to Jared it had a meaning deeper thna words.

Jared was the Connector of the baby ferit!

Jared smiled politely back at Josie and watched as she retrieved a wriggling ball of fluff from the litter. The melon orange kit was a dark brown all over, except a quite striking white mask and front paw to match.

When Josie carefully placed him on the ground the kit ran straight towards Jared, who made to crouch down to his new pet.

The little furball started squeaking in what appeared to be protest, but Jared had already felt the tiny mind hit him like a lightening bolt. He was too big! The kit felt too small and thought he was much too large!

Laughing out loud, he knelt down on the ground and scooped the brown up, sending loving feelings towards him. "There there, little man," he whispered, "Look, you're as big as me now!" He stood up carefully, not wanting to drop the young ferit.

"He's perfect," he said to Josie, Raco and Sunheart.

Holding him up firmly and looking into the ferit's bright blue eyes. "Deyna, I think. Yes?" Soleil and Doe chirped their agreement after delicate observation. Nodding, Jared held Deyna to him once more, satisfied. At last he wasn't the only male among females!

Deyna hadn't seemed to notice the little naming ceremony that had gone on. He was just relieved to be back near something more solid than air!

Kestrel watched as Jared recieved his ferit with the tiny orange nail mark. Hers would be just as eager to see her.

Hanrak ran into the room, breathless. When he heard the broadcast he was on the other side of the Weyrbowl and was bathing Dearyth. Up to his knees in water with oil and soap up to his elbows. So he dropped what he was doing, literally his brush, bucket and oiling cloth were still on the other side of the Weyrbowl, and flew to his Weyr so he could quickly get changed.

So that was why he was late. His face was red and he was puffing because Dearyth thought it would do him some good to have to run the whole way, cause he cut her bath short.

"I'm here." Hanrak puffed.

Josie was watching with amusement as the baby blue ferit kit pulled himself out of his basket all on his own. She looked up and smiled at Hanrak.

"Hey there Hanrak. As soon as Kestrel's kit Connects to her, I'll find yours" She said to him. His Dearyth was fro mthe same clutch as Farlith, and they'd been weyrlings together.

the baby blue Ferit ambled across the floor, searching with eyes and nose for the person he knew was there. With curious snufflings, he found Kestrel's foot, and climbed onto it. Then he sat down and squeaked shyly up at her. He was so tired- would she pick him up now?

On the little male's toenail were two blue dots- baby blue card and male.
Josie knew that the baby had Connected to Kestrel- an unconnected ferit acted differently towards a person. And he'd definately deliberately gone over to her!

"Looks like that little one's happy with you Kestrel!" She said, happy that the babies were going to new, caring homes. She looked back and Hanrak and tried to remember which ferit was his.

Oh, that was right. The Winter White baby!

Kestrel watched in delight as the ferit kit she'd come to bond with scrabbled out of the basket by himself and started ambling towards her. She beamed as he snuffled his way up to her and climbed on to her shoe. Looking down at the tiny ferit Kestrel suddenly felt an overwhelming sense of tiredness. The white ferit squeaked. "Oh that's you?", she gasped.

She bent down and scooped the little guy up, holding him close to her. Fathom chittered in protest. This was his person, who was this furball anyway?

"This is Tagg", Kestrel declared as she nuzzled her new pet. His mind was so different from Fathom's, but then again, they were completely different species.

"Looks like that little one's happy with you Kestrel!"

Kestrel beamed at Josie, "Thank you, he's perfect!"

Josie grinned. "Your welcome!i'm glad he's happy with you." And she turned to Jared. "and that your's is matched with you as well." Then she walked up to Hanrak and smiled, play-punching his shoulder.

"I'll go get your ferit now." Josie headed back to the basket, now much emptier, to the satisfaction of those kits still inside. She reached in and the Winter Whiteferit kit practically hopped into her hand. She brought the baby out and smiled, putting it on the floor.
The baby was perfectly white, and she had a little pink spot on one nail. Full of life, she bounded excitedly over to Hanrak, and stood a foot-length away, looking up at him and giving a ferit-grin. Then she darted towards his leg and attempted to climb up his pant-leg.

Josie grinned and tried not to laugh.

Hanrak bent down to pick up the excited ferit who was trying to crawl up his leg and, surprisingly, was succeeding...

Before she could get too far off his leg and risk falling off, Hanrak bent down and scooped the little girl up. He saw Josie's grin at his ferits antics and grinned himself. The white ferit squirmed happily in his arms. Turning in circles and rubbing her head against his hand.

The kit spun around a bit more before deciding that his arms weren't high enough. She crawled up his arm and onto his shoulder snuggling against his ear.

"It seems as if you have found your 'spot' haven't you?"
He smiled up at the ferit on his shoulder, her eyes roaming the room
"What shall we name you? How abouuuut... Sapheda? I like it... Sapheda..."

He smiled and walked off to show Dearyth their new pet...
