Valureth’s head hangs low as she watches over her eggs. Her hide is an unsightly shade of pale blue, much lighter than she was even on the day of her birth. With ever breath she takes her chest quavers with the effort. Muscles in her legs and wings twitch every so often, blood still courses through them, but courses straight back out. Without the strength to continue, keeping herself breathing was almost a waste of effort.
She was the epitome of the living dead. Still here, yet longing to be between, longing to lose herself in the numbing cold.
Without sight, or hearing, or touch. Without feelings. She needed between’s embrace to freeze her heart, to take away the pain.
Hers parted without her, left her behind. But she could not leave yet. She could not follow Hers into the dark void beyond this world until she had no one to leave behind. For she knew that pain, the pain of being left behind, left alone. She would not, could not, abandon her children like she had been abandoned.
She did not blame Hers, she couldn’t. Raiin had not wanted to leave, she had been taken. And Valureth had the choice. Raiin wouldn’t want her to leave at all, but to live on happily. Yet, in the sapphire’s heart she knew that life would only evoke memories, and the pain of seeing Raiin’s face was not worth living on in this world.
Valureth only had to last a short time more. The hatching was close, she could feel it in her soul. It brought her no joy, but it did bring her hope. Hope that the pain would end soon.
Her strength might fail even before the hatching. Her bones were already weak and her heart only just managed to keep beating. She had gone without food and water for so long. It was time to let the humans in before she could not fight back. She hoped that it was not needed. She hoped that her children would all impress to humans with good in their hearts and deeds. But she would watch them closely anyway.
It would take less effort for one human to move an entire mountain than it did for Valureth to lift herself up to sit. And it took more effort still for her to call out to the candidates and a master. And again, more effort to withhold her sadness from overrunning their minds when she touched them.
The call came as quietly as a whisper, but strong enough to let them know that she was no gone yet. That she would mind her eggs to her last breath. It was almost daring someone to step out of line, for then she could release her pain onto them. And she would, readily.
It is time for my children to meet their lifemates. Come.
