Judurith suddenly spoke up as Raelyn was oiling the violet queen.
I am ready! Let them just try to catch ME! the dragon roareed. Judurith leaped away from the ledge, leaving Raelyn standing there, hand raised to wipe a rough patch on the violet hide. <What are you talking about, dear?!> She asked her dragon, then she counted the time since Judurith's hatching, and gasped. groaning, she dropped the bucket and towel, and tore off down the maze of hall until she got to the feeding grounds.there! the violet queen was in Heat! she was going to Fly for the first time! Raelyn shook. She'd had a bad time of mating flights while she was a weyrling, and had tried to forget that Judurith was a female dragon, one who would fly often. now her fear hit her, but she strained to remain calm, to keep her Judurith from gorging or going between. Judurith snapped her wings together, slashing down through the air to grab onto a fat wherry. tearing into the meat, the violet let out a growl so unlike her, Raelyn was surprised. <Judurith!do not gorge! drink only the blood! you want a strong flight!> She told the irascible dragon, pushing her towards a second wherry with her mind as the violet finished feasting on the blood of the first wherry. Judurth struggled, but gave in, snatching a second wherry from the herd. by this time, large browns, teals, and all the bronzes that did not have mates had gathered around Judurith. Raelyn was aware in one corner of her mind, with frightening closeness, that all those riders of the dragons watching her violet were gathered around her, watching her as well.struggling to remain calm for her dragon, she told Judurith to Fly, and the queen pushed off from the carcass with a snarl, throwing herself into the air. quickly, bronzes and teals and browns followed, leaping from the ledges, or pushing off from the ground. suddenly, Raelyn was unaware of anything but Judurith, and she WAS the dragon! Judurith flapped hard, downstroke after upstroke and soaring over the thermals. catching an updraft of heat, she soared above the puny bronzes, teals and browns, roaring her power into the wind. nearest her was bronze Nimirith, who caught the same updraft as she! the crafty bronze twisted through the air to keep up with herspeed. two browns and a teal dropped out then, too tired to carry on. soon a large teal caught up, and nimirith and the teal raced towards her. she slowed, and the teal over shot her, roaring in surprise. he was out. Nimirith had slowed with her, matching her speed as the last brown dropped out. now there was Nmirith and colguth (a teal) and blue Shareth was still in the running, somehow, though he was miles behind them. Judurith swerved out of the way as colguth barreled past her, temporarily stuck in a wind-river. as she maneuvered around him, Nimirith caught her, wrapping his tail with her's . I have caught you, my fair queen, and you are with me! Bronze Nimirith Crooned to her, as the teal escaped from the river of wind and drooped in disapointment.
wrapping wings with her new mate, violet Judurith crooned in happiness as the one she had wanted won her.

Raelyn was back in her self, no longer dragon. she immediately realized she was on a soft bed next to G'rin. squirming away, she pulled on a robe-- one of the AIVAS-made ones-- and sliped out of the bed. G'rin awoke. frowning in the dark, he noticed that Raelyn hadd moved away, and had gotten out of bed. "raelyn? what's wrong?!" the new WeyrWoman was- crying!
He sought Nimirith's mind, but the dragon was asleep next to judurith. "did you hurt yourself on something?" he wondered, worried. when she shook her head, his curiosity grew. "well, what is it? do you not find in me an exceptable partner?!" suddenly he grew upset, worried that she did not like him. they were pertners, but if they did not get along..... she cleared up his worries with a shake of her head. he was quiet for a time, and just as he opened his mouth to inquire again, Raelyn spoke, in a hesitant, shaky voice. "it- it is not that i do not like you.. it is that, well, to begin at the begining, when i was just a weyrling, the-the mating flights of the other dragons were horrible! the.." she could not continue at first, tears falling down her cheeks. "the male riders would grow amorous.. and i was always..." this time he stopped her words by coming over to her, and he kissed her cheeks where the tears ran down them. holding onto her arm, he guided her over to the bed, and slipped on a robe of his own. G'rin gave a small msile to Raelyn. her eyes were clouded, and he sat down next to her to comfort her. "it will never be like that again-- it was not like that this time! with our dragons mated, we cannot hurt one another! I--" here he paused, took a deep breath, and finished the statement. "I would NEVER do something to you that was against your will!" his declaration qualmed her fears, and she found tht she quite liked the tanned bronzerider... she just was not sure if she liked him as more than a good friend yet. "i am not sure if.. if i couldlove eyou- i do not know you yet- but i trust you.. and for now- for now friendship will sufice." she told him, leaning against him. G'rin smiled. friends was fine with him- for now. but he would win her like Nimirith had won Judurith before even the Flight! he gave her a warm hug- nothing more than that of two good friends comforting and comforted by each other.
